Save vs. Splurge - Bedding

I did a Save vs. Splurge post a few weeks ago and I want to make this a series! I love decorating on a budget and fully believe that you can get a high end look without spending a ton of money. So, I want to take on the challenge of finding less expensive options for more expensive items. This week I am comparing bedding. I've found some beautiful but expensive bedding, and I'm going to compare it to a less expensive option.

Can you tell which is more expensive? Both of these comforters have beautiful ruffle detail and are both a crisp white. As I said in my post "5 Ingredients for a Perfect Farmhouse Style" decorating with white is an important ingredient to the farmhouse style.

The bedding on the left is $650 and the bedding on the right is only $99!

Both of these duvet covers go perfectly with the farmhouse style. They are classic and simple with the stripes and neutral colors. One of these is over $500 and the other is under $100. Can you guess which is which?

The one on the left is $84.99 and the one on the right is $526!

These two comforters have great texture that add so much to a space. I love adding texture when decorating. One of these comforters is under $100 and the other is over $200. Can you tell the difference?

The one on the left is $89.99 and the one on the right is $203.99.

As I said above, I love decorating on a budget, especially when I can find options that are so similar to those more expensive items. Most of the time you can't tell the difference and I love that you can get the same look for a lot less.

Save vs. Splurge

Decorating your home can get expensive. CAN. It doesn't have to though. You don't need to spend a lot of money on everything you buy for your home. There is no need for designer everything. You can get a beautiful home without breaking the bank.

With that said, there are some things that I think are worth spending a little bit more on. That's what I want to talk about here. What's worth the splurge and where can you save.

Splurge

The first thing that I would recommend splurging on is furniture. It may sound obvious, but it's a big deal. This is an item that is an anchor in your room. You want it to be good quality because it's not something you will replace each year or even every 2-3 years. You want a sofa that will last a long time and that will stay in good shape. I'm not saying you need to buy only designer top of the line furniture, but it is something that you will want to spend a good amount on just because you will want it to last. So furniture goes in the splurge category.

Save

Next is throw pillows. This is a save item. In my opinion, throw pillows are more for their look rather than their comfort. So as long as they're aesthetically appealing they're good. You can find throw pillows and throw pillow covers for under $10 some places. So pillows go in the save category.

Splurge

Next is your area rug. This one's tricky because I love a good deal (who doesn't) but sometimes you need to spend more on something to get the quality you want. So, I would say spend more on this item, but look for sales. You want your area rug to be good quality because you will literally be walking all over it. However, if you're like me you may want to switch it out more often than you will your sofa. So I would put area rugs into the splurge category with the side note to look for sales.

Save

Finally, let's talk about the smaller decor. In general I would say your smaller decor can go into the save category. There are exceptions, but overall I would say save on decor. I would categorize smaller decor as vases, faux floral, frames, things that you want to look nice, but that you may want to switch out from time to time. I love to switch things out pretty often, so I don't spend a lot of money on my smaller decor items. I look for sales, a lot, and like to shop at Home Goods, TJMaxx, and Marshall's. In my opinion I don't want to buy a $50 vase that I will be changing out for the next season. So, in general, I would put decor in the save category.

I hope this post helped you decide what to save on and what to splurge on. This is just how I like to delegate what to spend more on and what to spend less on. Some things you need to splurge on, like furniture and rugs, but other things can be less expensive, like throw pillows and smaller decor items. If you have any questions on what you should save or splurge on leave me a comment below :)
